Vitamin D
Vitamin D3 occurs in nature almost exclusively in animal sources, especially fish, dairy products, eggs, and meat. Plants such as lichens also contain vitamin D, as do various fungi, which, however, contain the less effective vitamin D2.
Vitamin D occupies a very special position among vitamins. Firstly, it is one of the few vitamins that we hardly obtain through food, but instead produce in the skin with the help of sunlight; secondly, vitamin D is not a vitamin in the classical sense, but rather a hormone precursor.
Unlike many other vitamins, it is converted in the body into an important hormone that regulates cell function and numerous bodily processes. Almost all body cells have specific receptors for the vitamin D hormone and depend on an adequate supply of vitamin D.
Vitamin D is still the subject of intensive research. Almost every year, new mechanisms of action of this fascinating vitamin are discovered.
Bioactive Alpha-Tocopherol
Chemically speaking, vitamin E is an entire group of vitamins consisting of 8 different compounds. These are divided into 4 tocopherols and 4 tocotrienols, each distinguished by the prefixes alpha, beta, gamma, delta.
Alpha-tocopherol is the form of vitamin E with the highest bioactivity and the only form recognized as being able to meet the human vitamin E requirement. The activity of all other forms of vitamin E is measured against that of alpha-tocopherol.
The alpha-tocopherol molecule can exist in several geometric forms. Natural alpha-tocopherol is always present as D-alpha-tocopherol. Only this form exhibits the desired biological effect in the body. Synthetic vitamin E, on the other hand, is usually a mixture of different isomers and also contains the biologically inactive L-alpha-tocopherol. This form has lower bioavailability and bioactivity. Vitamin K
Vitamin K occurs naturally as vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and vitamin K2 (menaquinone), with vitamin K2 appearing to be the more active of the two forms. Phylloquinone is found primarily in plants, while menaquinone is produced by some human gut bacteria or in foods fermented by microorganisms, such as... u.a. Sauerkraut or the Japanese dish Natto.
Vitamin K2 activates a whole range of special proteins in the body that play a role in important metabolic processes, including the transport and utilization of calcium and blood clotting.
Currently, almost all authorities do not consider vitamin K2 separately, but only all vitamins of the K group together. Accordingly, only the statements approved for vitamin K1 currently apply to vitamin K2.
VITAMIN K2 AND VITAMIN D
Vitamin K2 is the most important partner of vitamin D in regulating calcium metabolism. Together, the two vitamins control bone-building and bone-resorbing cells and important transport molecules that ensure the proper utilization of calcium.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins and regulates a variety of important bodily functions. Vitamin A is known for its particular importance in maintaining eyesight. It is essential for the normal function of our skin and the mucous membranes in the mouth, nose, intestines, and reproductive organs.
