The hericium mushroom, also known as "hedgehog's mane" because of its appearance, is a very popular edible mushroom with its 32 aromatic substances and also grows in local forests - and there especially on the wounds of old or dead deciduous trees. It was first cultivated in China in the 1950s and is now also bred here.
Areas of application and effect
Hericium contains all 8 essential amino acids for humans. Many alternative practitioners use the Hericium for problems in the digestive tract.
In initial studies, certain hydrophilic polysaccharides of the Hericium show anticarcinogenic and antimetastatic properties. This is attributed to an assumed increased activity of the scavenger cells (macrophages) and other immune cells.
Many users report a positive effect on psychological complaints such as depressive moods, sleep disorders or nervousness.
Hericium ingredients could promote the regeneration of nerve cells and the growth of nerve fibers, which is why this fungus is often used to accompany therapy in dementia, Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis.
Why are extracts better than mushroom powder?
Mushroom extracts contain in particular the highly effective and bioactive polysaccharides and glucans in high concentrations, which are relevant for the immune system.
The extraction not only causes the release of the active substances from the cell organelles, but also the enrichment of the fungal Active substances by separating the insoluble accompanying substances.
Another advantage of extracts compared to powder is the standardization and reproducibility. In this way, the dosage and combination with other preparations can be carried out precisely and in a targeted manner.
Shellbroken process and fruiting bodies
The mushroom powder, which is then later extracted using hot water, is produced using the so-called “Shellbroken Process”; the fungus is ground so finely that the chitin cell wall of the fungus is broken open. This enables a polysaccharide content of 30% and the ingredients can be optimally utilized by the organism.
Only the fruiting body is used for the production of the mushroom extracts, NOT the underground part ("mycelium"), which contains hardly any nutrients, and the substrate on which the mushroom is grown. Otherwise, there could be many undesirable by-products in this substrate, from wood to dung.
