Hericium - hedgehog beard

Origin

The Hericium mushroom, also called “hedgehog beard” because of its appearance, is a very popular edible mushroom with its 32 aromatic substances and also grows in local forests - especially on the wounds of old or dead deciduous trees. It was first cultivated in China in the 1950s and is now also bred here.

Areas of application and effect

The Hericium contains all 8 amino acids essential for humans. Many alternative practitioners use Hericium for problems in the digestive tract.

Certain hydrophilic polysaccharides from Hericium show in initial studies anti-carcinogenic and anti-metastatic properties. This is attributed to a suspected increased activity of phagocytes (macrophages) and other immune cells.

Many users report a positive effect on psychological complaints such as depressive moods, sleep disorders or nervousness.

Ingredients of Hericium could promote the regeneration of nerve cells and the growth of nerve fibers, which means that this mushroom is often used as an adjunct to therapy for dementia, Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis.

Why are extracts better than mushroom powder?

Mushroom extracts contain in particular the highly effective and bioactive polysaccharides and glucans in high concentrations, which are relevant for the immune system.
The extraction not only causes the release of the active substances from the cell organelles, but also the enrichment of the fungal Active substances by separating the insoluble accompanying substances.

Another advantage of extracts over powder is their ability to be standardized and reproducible. This means that the dosage and combination with other preparations can be carried out precisely and in a targeted manner.

Shellbroken process and fruiting bodies

The mushroom powder, which is then later extracted using hot water extract, is produced using the so-called “shellbroken process”; The fungus is ground so finely that the chitin cell wall of the fungus is broken down. This allows a polysaccharide content of 30% and the ingredients can be optimally utilized by the organism.

Only the fruiting body is used to produce the mushroom extracts, NOT the part underground (“mycelium”), which contains hardly any nutrients, nor the substrate on which the mushroom is grown. Otherwise, this substrate could contain many undesirable by-products, from wood to dung.
