Prakriti and Vikriti
In Ayurveda, the human being is seen as an individual unity of body, soul and spirit. The universe and all life is made up of the five elements water, earth, fire, air and ether (space) - as are humans. Ayurveda summarizes the five elements in the functional principles (Doshas) "Vata", "Pitta" and "Kapha".
- The Vata functional principle is made up of space and air
- The Pitta functional principle is the combination of fire and water
- The Kapha functional principle results from water and earth
The Doshas are forces that control all biological and psychological processes of our body, mind and consciousness.
Every human being is born with a basic constitution ("Prakriti"). Prakriti is the combination of doshas for the individual human being. Everyone always has all three doshas in them. One or two doshas are usually dominant - one speaks of a certain dosha type or - if two doshas predominate - mixed type. There are very few people with the tri- or sama-dosha constitution who are born with a very high balance of all three bio-energies in body and mind. So Prakriti is our basis. This is as unique as a fingerprint.
There is also a "bioenergetic snapshot" for every human being. This is Ayurvedic "Vikriti" - the current state - the ratio of bioenergies. This can be completely different from the basic constitution and also consists of all three doshas.
One of the most beautiful and important terms of Ayurveda therapy is "svastha", the healthy state. This word means "staying in the self".
The aim of Ayurveda therapy is to recognize whether the person is in their true self, in their innermost nature and - if not - to compensate for the bioenergetic imbalance. From an Ayurvedic perspective, this is disease prevention. However, the imbalance does not refer to the "best case" with 1/3 Vata, 1/3 Pitta and 1/3 Kapha, as one might think, but our current constitution should always match our natural constitution as far as possible! If the bio-energies are balanced (Prakriti and Vikriti differ as little as possible), they maintain the healthy state of the human being and even strengthen the immune system.
