Prakriti and Vikriti
In Ayurveda, humans are considered to be individual units of body, soul and spirit. The universe and all life is made up of the five elements water, earth, fire, air and ether (space) - and so are humans. Ayurveda combines the five elements into the functional principles (doshas) "Vata", "Pitta" and "Kapha".
- The Vata Functional principle is formed from space and air
- The Pitta The functional principle is the combination of fire and water
- The Kapha Functional principle arises from water and earth
The doshas are forces that control all biological and psychological processes of our body, mind and consciousness.
Every human being is born with a basic constitution (“Prakriti“). Prakriti is the combination of doshas for the individual person. Every person always has all three doshas within them. One or two doshas are usually dominant/predominant - one then speaks of a certain dosha type or - if two doshas predominate - a mixed type. Very rarely there are people with the tri- or sama-dosha constitution who have a very large balance of all three bioenergies in body and mind from birth. Prakriti is therefore our basis. It is as unique as a fingerprint.
There is also a “bioenergetic snapshot" in every person. This is Ayurvedic "Vikriti" – the current state – the ratio of bioenergies. This can be completely different from the basic constitution and also consists of all three doshas.
One of the most beautiful and important terms in Ayurveda therapy is “svastha", the healthy state. This word means "dwelling in the self".
The aim of Ayurveda therapy is to recognize whether the person in the true self, in his innermost nature and - if not - to balance the bioenergetic imbalance. From an Ayurvedic perspective, this is disease prevention. However, the imbalance does not refer to the "best case" with 1/3 Vata, 1/3 Pitta and 1/3 Kapha, as one might think, but our current constitution should always be as consistent as possible with our natural constitution! If the bioenergies are balanced (Prakriti and Vikriti differ as little as possible), they maintain the healthy state of the person and even strengthen the immune system.
