70 to 80% of all our perceptions are conveyed through our eyes. In Ayurveda, the doshas are divided into five subdoshas, each responsible for different bodily functions. Normally, each subdosha is responsible for several functions – however, within the Pitta dosha, there is a subdosha solely responsible for the eyes. Furthermore, other subdoshas also influence eye function. Therefore, the eyes are of great importance in Ayurveda.
Our eyes radiate the subtle essence "Ojas" and convey information about the current state of the three Gunas: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. How can we support our eyes? Strengthening Agni (digestive fire) and the associated promotion of Ama (toxin elimination) facilitates the absorption and supply of nutrients and vital substances to the body. Deacidification and an alkaline-rich diet protect the eyes from harmful substances. Digital detox, or consciously reducing visual stimuli, prevents eye strain.
OPC 40 is recommended by various sources for chronic eye strain caused by prolonged computer work. Among Ayurvedic herbs and foods, the Amla berry is considered Pitta-regulating. According to Ayurvedic principles, Triphala balances all three Doshas. Dissolved in water, it is used by doctors to treat eye inflammations. Please only use it under the supervision of a doctor! From an Ayurvedic perspective, ghee is a good remedy for eye care. For dry eyes, gently warmed and applied to the eye (one drop) is recommended.
