The metabolism or the digestive fire "Agni" is a central point in Ayurveda. The digestive fire burns with its respective strength according to the individual constitution. All disturbances of the bio-energetic balance lead to a weakening of the digestive, absorption and renewal functions of the metabolism.
On average, each of us spends about 6.5 hours a day sitting down. That's actually far too long and - quite clearly - there's only so much we can do about it. Nevertheless, the consequences are really bad, especially for our metabolism, which runs on low power all day long.
In addition, we often snack throughout the day, i.e., instead of eating regular meals, we eat something here and there. This is also bad for our metabolism.
Because every person is different and has a different basic constitution, the metabolism is also different for each person depending on Prakriti. Disturbance in metabolism is often seen in digestionAyurveda says that each of us should go to the toilet once a day and empty our bowels completely. The excretion should not be too hard or too liquid.
Nevertheless, there are principles that are good for everyone and easy to implement in everyday life. Following these is worthwhile, as a healthy metabolism in Ayurveda is one of the keys to a healthy life.
Ayurveda says that 98% of all diseases have their origin in an imbalance in metabolism. Our immune system suffers from this imbalance. Metabolic disorders can manifest themselves in many different ways: some people have a bloated stomach, others have sluggish or rapid digestion.
What to do? Tips from Ayurveda
- inner shower: Start the morning with a glass (or more) of warm water with a few drops of lemon juice. This ignites the digestive fire.
- making fire: To aid digestion, combat flatulence and other discomforts, it helps to use several anti-flatulence spices when preparing food. These include cumin, anise, ginger, pepper, garlic and turmeric.
- goodbye to fire extinguishers: You should actually see the digestive fire in a visual way. Ayurveda also says that you should drink as much as possible throughout the day, but it would be good if you managed not to drink anything for half an hour before and during meals. Above all, you should avoid ice-cold drinks. This weakens the digestive fire and thus the metabolism.
- Rest & Digest: Try to take breaks between meals. This gives the body the opportunity to filter the nutrients from the food - to metabolize them. Constantly "refilling" food is bad for the metabolism. Try to "fast" after a meal and only eat something again after 4-5 hours. If you feel hungry, try drinking warm water first, because we often misinterpret a rumbling stomach as hunger, even though our body is craving water.
- relieve metabolism: The digestive fire is weak in the morning, strongest at midday and not quite as strong in the evening, so our recommendation is to eat soups and cooked vegetables in the evening and avoid animal protein such as meat and cheese. This principle relieves the burden on your metabolism.
- As an additional "Kick-Start" For your metabolism you could prepare a tea: You need ½ teaspoon fennel, ½ teaspoon cumin and two slices of freshly crushed ginger. You pour this with 200 milliliters of boiled water and let the tea five minutesThe tea boosts your metabolism immediately. You should drink it half an hour before and after eating.
